Doodle Dog Clothing: What Your Doodle Actually Needs to Wear (and What Is Really for You)

Walk into any pet store in October and there is a whole wall of tiny sweaters, puffer vests and plaid hoodies, and somewhere in front of it a doodle owner is holding one up and squinting. Will it fit over all that hair? Does the dog even need it? Will he forgive me? Fair questions, and the answers are not the ones printed on the packaging.

Does a doodle need doodle dog clothing at all?

Mostly, no. A doodle already wears a thick, curly coat that traps a layer of warm air against the skin, and it does that job better than anything sold on a hanger. We made the same point about summer heat: the coat is insulation, and it works in both directions. A full-coated Goldendoodle on a cold morning walk is usually comfortable as it is, and a sweater on top mostly makes a warm dog warmer.

There are real exceptions, and they are worth knowing:

• Right after a short shave. A dog clipped close to remove mats in January lost its insulation overnight. A simple fleece layer for walks bridges the weeks until the coat grows back.
• Small doodles in real cold. A toy Cavapoo or a Maltipoo has far less body to hold heat, and cavapoo clothes earn their place on icy days in a way a 70 pound Bernedoodle's never will.
• Seniors and thin dogs. An older dog who has started to shiver on winter walks may genuinely welcome a layer.

The pieces that actually earn their place

If you buy one piece of doodle dog clothes, make it a rain coat, and not for warmth. A doodle coat soaks up water and mud like a sponge, from the belly and legs upward. A rain coat that covers the chest and underside keeps the worst of it off, and on a wet week it can turn a full bath into a towel and a quick brush. A doodle's back stays surprisingly clean on a rainy walk while the belly does all the mopping, so skip the styles that only cover the top.

• Booties for salted sidewalks. Road salt and ice melt dry and crack paw pads, and the fur between the toes packs with ice balls. Most dogs walk like astronauts for the first few minutes, then forget they are wearing anything.
• Something bright for dark walks. Once the evening walk starts after sunset, a reflective vest or a clip-on light is the one piece of dog clothing that is purely about being seen.

The catch: clothes make mats

This is the part pet stores never mention. Doodle hair mats wherever it gets rubbed, and clothing rubs. Every strap, seam and armhole is a friction line, and the classic spots for mats, the armpits, the chest and the back of the neck, are exactly where a sweater sits. A dog that lives in a sweater all day can come out of it with a felted chest by the weekend.

• On for the walk, off at the door. Dog clothing is outdoor gear, not a house outfit.
• Never over a damp coat. Wet hair trapped under fabric tangles fastest of all.

Measuring a dog who is mostly fluff

Doodle sizing is where most returns come from. Measure three things with a soft tape, over the coat as it is today: the chest at its widest point just behind the front legs, the neck where the collar sits, and the back from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Then remember the coat changes. A rain coat that fits snugly the week before a groom can slide around the week after, so adjustable straps beat a tight fixed fit every time. Caught between two sizes, go up.
